Center for Applied Mathematics, Fudan University

The Center for Applied Mathematics at Fudan University (Fudan-CAM) is dedicated to advancing national strategic scientific and technological capabilities through cutting-edge applied mathematical research. Positioned as a hub for foundational studies in applied mathematics, the Center focuses on addressing key mathematical challenges arising from the scientific and technological frontier. With a strong emphasis on both theoretical development and real-world application, Fudan-CAM is committed to fostering innovation that aligns with the nation's strategic needs.

As a key branch of the Shanghai National Center for Applied Mathematics, which was established in 2020 with approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Fudan co-center began full-scale operations in September 2023. Built upon the academic foundation of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Fudan University (https://math.fudan.edu.cn/add a link to the web of Math department here), Fudan-CAM serves as a dynamic platform for advanced research, multi-discipline collaboration, and mathematical knowledge transfer.

Fudan-CAM’s core mission is to:

  • Elevate Research Excellence: Strengthen the capabilities of existing applied mathematics teams and attract world-class scholars in statistics, big data, artificial intelligence, and scientific computing.

  • Foster Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Facilitate cross-disciplinary partnerships with experts in life sciences and medicine, materials science, data science and algorithms, electronic information, and computer science to identify and tackle major frontier problems in applied mathematics.

  • Bridge Theory and Practice: Translate mathematical research into technological innovation by engaging with national defense, industry, and government sectors to address real-world challenges with practical applications.

  • Promote Impactful Research: Drive organized and goal-oriented applied mathematical studies that enhance the quality of scientific innovation and accelerate the translation of breakthroughs into societal benefits.

  • Cultivate Talent: Refine talent development and evaluation systems to inspire researchers to pursue problem-driven applied mathematics with a strong sense of purpose and impact.

Fudan-CAM's existing strengths include mature research teams in mathematical problems of electronic design automation (EDA) and complex systems theory. The Center is actively building core groups focused on partial differential equations, neural networks, intelligent logistics, artificial intelligence theory, and foundational work in algorithms and machine learning. Currently, Fudan-CAM's strategic Research Focus includes:

  • Applied Mathematical Theory – Applied PDEs, Fluid and Mechanical Physics, Mathematical Theory for Machine Learning, Industrial-oriented Applied Mathematics.

  • Interdisciplinary Mathematical Studies – Cross-disciplinary models in Life Sciences, Materials Science, and Information Technology; Mathematical foundations for Data Science and Computational Biology; Collaborative research in Medicine, Engineering, and Physics.

  • AI-Driven Industrial Software – Mathematical algorithms for intelligent design and simulation; Optimization and modeling for EDA and smart manufacturing; Core technologies for next-generation industrial software.

  • Foundations of Intelligent Mathematical Systems (JS Mathematics) – Theoretical underpinnings of intelligent computing; Symbolic reasoning and logic systems; Mathematical frameworks for AI-augmented decision-making and automated problem-solving.

  • Next-Generation Mathemtical Modelling and Algorithms – Advanced machine learning theory, New algorithmic architectures, Mathematical modeling of complex systems, Foundational support for scalable and interpretable AI.

With a forward-looking vision, Fudan-CAM will continue to align its research with national priorities and scientific advancements. By forging strong collaborations with key technology enterprises, it seeks to transform theoretical innovation into practical productivity and to serve as a driving force in shaping the future of applied mathematics in Shanghai and in the world.
